LCMS President Matthew Harrison again responds to a recent disaster, this time in Joplin, MO. He updates us on the excellent mercy work that's already underway and encourages us to give generously to aid our brothers and sisters and others in the Joplin community.

Homily for Third Sunday of Easter

It's always a joy to proclaim the Lord our Shepherd on "Good Shepherd Sunday," otherwise known as Misericordias Domini ("Tender Mercies of the Lord") Sunday or Third Sunday of Easter. This year's homily focused on the Epistle from 1 Peter 2:21-25, especially where Peter says, "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example...."

That "example" comes from the first grade classroom where the teacher writes a letter or word on the paper (or, in the ancient world, a tablet with wax on it) and the student literally traces the very thing that the teacher first wrote. In the same way, we Christians follow - trace the pattern - "Where Our Good Shepherd Leads Us" through suffering and into life eternal with Him.

Homily for Second Sunday of Easter

When Jesus first appears to His disciples on Easter evening, He gives them "Peace in Forgiveness." He calms their fearful agitation by saying, "Peace be with you," and He authorizes them to forgive sins - the peace of His Absolution. Today's homily focused on this peace, applying it to many things that bring us fear and agitation.
